Youth Workers Gather in Nairobi, Kenya: An Unforgettable Convergence

Picture this: the stillness of time, the overwhelming embrace of God’s presence and the infectious energy of youth workers from across Africa gathered in Nairobi, Kenya. From 29-31 July 2024, Africa Nazarene University (ANU) was the epicentre of hope, unity and innovation as youth leaders converged to connect, network and embark on a transformative journey under the theme “Rooted, Relevant, Renewed”.

Through spirited singing, dancing, bonfire conversations, laughter filling the campus, earnest prayers and engaging discussions over meals, ideas and dreams were shared with individuals from different countries and districts. This was not just a conference; it exemplified the unity and diversity that is at the heart of youth ministry.

At the heart of this gathering, around 150 district and local NYI (Nazarene Youth International) leaders representing 20 districts came together at ANU. Their mission was to immerse themselves in devotional sessions, educational workshops, worship services, networking opportunities and moments of reflection. Engaging and insightful speakers illuminated various topics, including, but not limited to: Living Out the Nazarene Calling, Bridging Generations, Understanding, Connecting with and Serving Multifaceted Youth in Today’s Church, Building Bridges: Cultivating Peace and Resolving Conflict in Our Communities, Rooted in Faith: Empowering Today’s Youth through 1 Timothy 4:12, Effective Youth Ministry Planning, mental health, mentoring and role modelling. These sessions were times of exchanges that fostered learning and growth.

The conference ended off with the launch of the Youth Worker Academy—a two-year training programme. This academy is set to be holistic in its approach for equipping youth workers across Africa to lead ministries with dynamism and excellence. Graduates will emerge not only as skilled leaders ready to serve the Church of the Nazarene but as competent ambassadors capable of engaging in critical conversations affecting youth. This programme’s purpose is to be a catalyst for change and transformation in the youth ministry landscape.

Africa NYI has embarked on a strategic journey, inviting all to join. After prayer and strategic dialogues, the movement is gaining momentum. Youth workers encouraged to join in whatever capacity possible—be it through prayer, support or active participation.

Special thanks to the dedicated collaborators in various ministries and organisations within the Africa Region and the RD’s office. Their unwavering support during the preparation and execution stages was invaluable. Heartfelt gratitude extends to all volunteers, supporters and prayer warriors who participated in this journey.
