We are pleased to announce that on 9 February, 2021, Global Missions Director Verne Ward, upon the recommendation of Africa Regional Director Dr. Daniel Gomis and in consultation with Jurisdictional General Superintendent Dr. David A. Busic, appointed Rev. Mario Martinez as field strategy coordinator for the Africa Central Field and Dr. Musawenkhosi Kunene as field strategy coordinator for the Africa East Field, both effective March 1, 2021.

Rev. Martinez (Mario) and his wife Irma served in ministry in Argentina and then as missionaries in Equatorial Guinea and most recently in Guinea Bissau. Mario fills the position that has been held by Dr. Daniel Gomis for an interim period, and was previously held by Rev. Gavin Fothergill.

Irma and Mario Martinez are global missionaries serving the Church of the Nazarene in Guinea Bissau.  As of March 2021, they will begin serving as Field Strategy Coordinators for the Central Field, while continuing to oversee the work in Guinea Bissau.

They began their missionary service in 2002 by pioneering the work in Equatorial Guinea; the last Spanish-speaking country in which we did not have a presence. From there they moved to pioneer the work in Guinea Bissau. Both are ordained ministers of the church.  They each graduated with a B.A. in Theology from the Nazarene Theological Seminary of South America in Argentina.  Mario has a master’s degree in Theology from the same seminary as well.  They both served as pastors in the Central District of Argentina. Mario served as a professor of theology, President of Nazarene Youth International and Vice-Chancellor of Academics in the Nazarene Seminary of South America. He also served as District Superintendent in the Central District of Argentina.

Irma has served as President of Nazarene Missions International and Sunday School Ministries at the district level; she also served as a pastor/preacher at Women’s Retreat, Treasurer of the Association of Church of the Nazarene in Argentina, and Professor of Theology.  They have an adult daughter named Jessica.

Dr. Kunene (Musawenkhosi) will be filling the Africa East position upon the retirement of current FSC Rev. Don Gardner. Musawenkhosi will continue in his position as FSC for Africa South Field for the time being, transitioning out of this role by mid-year 2021.

Musawenkhosi and Prudence currently serve as the Field Strategy Coordinators for the Africa South Field.

Musawenkhosi grew up attending Ntondozi Church of the Nazarene in Swaziland (now eSwatini) and received Christ as his Lord and Savior while in high school.  From that time Musawenkhosi sensed a call to preach the gospel. The Lord pressed upon him the need to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ. He served as local youth president for three years before answering the call.  He attended Swaziland Nazarene Bible College (now SANU) where he served in the college Rally Team for a year and started pastoring in his second year. He pastored a church in the North district where he also served as District NYI President for 4 years and district CLT Director for 3 years.  He also taught Bible Knowledge and History for 7 years at Endzingeni Naz High school before joining SANU as a part-time lecturer.

In 2003 Musawenkhosi and Prudence moved to the UK, where Musa studied and pastored a local Church. He received an MA in Research Methodology from NTC Manchester as well as a PHD in New Testament from Manchester University. After a fruitful ministry in the UK, Musawenkhosi and his family returned to eSwatini, after being asked by the 2015 District Assembly to come and serve as DS of Eswatini Central District.  In July 2018 Rev. Dr. Kunene was assigned as the Field Strategy Coordinator for the Africa South Field.

Rev. Kunene has several degrees:  ThB. (Canadian Nazarene College); MA Religion (Southern Nazarene University); MA Research Methodology (NTC Manchester); PhD New Testament (Manchester University).

Prudence grew up going to Emvembili Church of the Nazarene in eSwatini.  She and Musa met in Nazarene Youth Holidays (NaYoHo) got married in September 1995 and have three beautiful daughters: Sinenkhosi (23), Phesheya (20), and Tiyandza (14).  Sinenkhosi and Phesheya are in University in the UK while Tiyandza is in High School. Prudence taught high school Maths and Science before beginning full time missionary service.

Please be in prayer for the Kunene and Martinez as they serve the two fields during a time of transition.
